La Jolla Bar Association, February 2018 MCLE Luncheon with Dean Stephen Ferruolo

Our next lunchtime MCLE program will be Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 12:00 pm, at the Manhattan of La Jolla restaurant (7766 Fay Avenue).   

We are pleased to have STEPHEN FERRUOLO, Dean and Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law as our speaker for the February lunch meeting. Dean Ferruolo will be giving a presentation in the subject area of Corporate & Business Law, focusing upon Recent Developments Regarding Attorneys’ Roles, Participation, Professional Responsibilities, and Liability Exposure in Corporate & Business Transactions. Dean Ferruolo will also include brief comment upon the current state of legal education in the United States.   

Dean Ferruolo blends the highest levels of academic knowledge and practice experience into his areas of legal expertise. We hope that you will be able to attend this lunchtime program, as it is certain to be both interesting and substantive, and Q&A will be included.

The program is currently evaluated as providing 1.0 hr general CLE credit.

 

Information about our speaker:

Academic:

Dean Stephen Ferruolo graduated magna cum laude from Wesleyan University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.  He earned his PhD in History at Princeton University and his JD at Stanford University, where he graduated with honors, and was member of the Order of the Coif.  From 1979 to 1987, he taught history as an assistant professor at Stanford University, during which period his work “The Origins of the University: The Schools of Paris and Their Critics” was published (Stanford University Press, 1985).

Professional:  

Dean Ferruolo clerked for the Honorable Bruce M. Selya of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He served as the founding partner and chair of the San Diego office of Goodwin Procter LLP; and he was also a partner and co-chair of the Corporate/VLG Practice Group at Heller Ehrman LLP in its Palo Alto, California and San Diego offices. 

From 2003 to 2011, Dean Ferruolo served as vice president and general counsel of BIOCOM, the world’s largest regional life sciences association, and then as its vice chairman from 2011 to 2014. 

Stephen Ferruolo was named dean of University of San Diego School of Law and joined the law school’s faculty in 2011.  He specializes in the areas of business, corporate, securities regulation and biotech law.    He advises USD’s National Transactional LawMeet® team and co-teaches business planning and in-house corporate counseling.

 

Additional Honors and Affiliations:

In 2006, BIOCOM awarded Dean Ferruolo with the William W. Otterson Service Award, presented for outstanding support of the life sciences industry in San Diego. The Daily Journal listed him as one of the “Top 25 Biotech Lawyers in California” for 2011. He was  selected for inclusion in the Corporate Law, Leveraged Buyouts and Private Equity Law, and Venture Capital Law categories of The Best Lawyers in San Diego. Dean Ferruolo is listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in the Life Sciences category and in the biotechnology law category of The Best Lawyers in America. In October 2014, the Law Library Justice Foundation honored Dean Ferruolo with the 2014 Bernard E. Witkin Award for Excellence in Teaching of the Law.
