We will be having a special, ZOOM-ONLY, MCLE program on Tuesday, August 8th from 12:00-1:00 pm for the specially required MCLE subject of Competency Issues. You will need to register in advance for this program.

We are very pleased to have as a return speaker, Greg Dorst, J.D.; CADC II  (Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor II), and Consultant to The Other Bar, presenting: “COMPETENCY: Reaching Out When Times Get Tough – Lawyers, Substance Abuse Disorders and Well Being.” Mr. Dorst last presented to our members during summer 2021, and we are fortunate to have this excellent speaker joining us again this year. 

In this presentation, Mr. Dorst, will focus on a number of issues bearing on Competency, including: getting help before loss of control; the “Problem” which prevents attorneys from reaching out for help;  developing Self Knowledge and the Desire to Change; Solutions for Attorneys;  and Resources available to members of the legal profession.

Our speaker is recognized for his expertise in the subject area, and intertwines his presentation with discussion questions such as:

  • How do we recognize use and abuse of alcohol and other substances?
  • Why are legal professionals prone to alcohol and drug abuse and addiction?
  • What are the impacts to family, friends, employers, clients and colleagues of alcohol and drug abusers?
  • When is it time to get professional help to intervene and preserve one’s health and career?  

Mr. Dorst draws on his own personal journey and experience to bring these important issues to the forefront.  

The program will provide 1.0 hour general participatory credit for the specially required MCLE subject, Competence Issues.

Some Information about our Speaker, Greg Dorst:

Greg Dorst was born in Fontana, California in 1955, the son steel mill parents. In 1973 he graduated from Chaffey High School and elected to attend Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA. By 1983 Greg had earned a law school degree from the University of La Verne College of Law and passed the California State Bar Exam.

As an attorney, Greg worked as a trial lawyer for the San Bernardino County Office of the District Attorney and as a private practitioner specializing in criminal defense and real estate litigation. In July of 1997, Greg stopped practicing law and began a new chapter in his life.

The year 2000 brought Certification as an Addiction Specialist and a career in the field of mental health and addiction. In 2004 Greg was selected to consult for The Other Bar, working with attorneys, judges and law students in need of help for substance abuse issues and mental health needs. In 2009 Greg became the CEO of Social Science Services, Inc., providing treatment for concurrent substance use disorders and mental health concerns for men, women, women with children and special needs adults at various sites throughout the Inland Empire area. 

Dovetailing with his work with the Other Bar, Greg is an Ordained Minister, on staff at the Sanctuary for Spiritual Living in Covina, California, bringing a wealth of spiritual knowledge and healing experience to those in need. 

Additionally, Greg has written articles for publications across the wellness spectrum on physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual awareness and wellness techniques. 

Greg is currently a member of the Attorney Wellness Committee for the California Lawyers Association.
