La Jolla Bar Association, March 2017 MCLE Luncheon with Summer Stephan

Our next MCLE  lunchtime program will be Thursday, March 9th, at noon, at the Manhattan of La Jolla restaurant (inside the Empress Hotel, 7766 Fay Avenue).

We are very pleased that our March speaker will be Summer Stephan, Chief Deputy District Attorney for San Diego County. Ms. Stephan will present a program entitled, “The Laws and Challenges of Human Trafficking – San Diego’s Combat Plan”.  

This program will provide 1.0 hour continuing education credit for the California State Bar and 1.0 hour in required subject area of “Recognition and Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession and Society.”

Some information about our speaker:

Summer Stephan has served San Diego County as a Deputy District Attorney for 27 years, and has tried more than 100 jury trials, including special circumstance homicides, sexually violent predators, child molestation, sexual assault, child abuse, school shooting, assault on peace officers, and human trafficking-related cases.

During her career as a prosecutor, Ms. Stephan has received numerous appointments, awards and commendations, including among them:

  • Appointment to Chief of the District Attorney’s Office North County Branch;
  • Appointment to Chief of the Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Division;
  • Appointment to Chief Deputy District Attorney for San Diego County (2012 to present);
  • Recipient of FBI commendation for organized crime prosecution;
  • Recipient D.A. Outstanding Achievement award – special circumstance homicide prosecution;
  • Recipient of the Chuck Nickel Awards for professional excellence and statewide impact in public safety by the San Diego County Deputy District Attorneys Association
  • Recipient of the Angel of Anti-Human Trafficking and “Modern Day Abolitionist” award;
  • Recipient of commendation (2014) by City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer as      Commission Partner for creating positive change in the community (2014);
  • Recipient of the “2016 Public Safety Leadership Award” by San Diegans Against Crime;  
  • Recipient of the 2016 “Spirit of the Community” Junior League award; and
  • Recipient of the 2016 “Voices for Justice” award by the Interfaith Center for Worker Justice.

 Ms. Stephan was selected to serve on the Governor’s Task Force for High-Risk Sex Offenders and Sexually-Violent Predators that created statewide policy in this area of law.   She spearheaded the  “Know the Price” campaign, which focused on reducing sexual assaults of college students.  Ms. Stephan led the award-winning “The Ugly Truth” Human Trafficking Campaign; and she chairs the Task Force on Threats of Targeted Violence to our schools and community.  She also serves as Chair of the County of San Diego Human Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Advisory Council; is Co-Chair of the California District Attorneys Association Human Trafficking Committee;  and she chairs the Women Prosecutors of the National District Attorneys Association, Human Trafficking Committee.
