January 8, 2015 MCLE Luncheon-The Honorable Judith L. Haller on Ethics

The La Jolla Bar Association is pleased to have as our speaker, The Honorable Judith L. Haller, Associate Justice of the California  Courts of Appeal, Fourth District Court of Appeal.  Justice Haller will speak about the Code of Judicial Ethics, which governs the ethical conduct of judicial officers on and off the bench.  Justice Halller will address several of the canons which impact the manner in which judges and attorneys interact professionally and socially, including those concerning disclosure and disqualification obligations; ex parte communications; gifts and social interactions between attorneys and judicial officers; fundraising activities; and political endorsements and judicial campaigns.

 Justice Haller has suggested four ethics opinions as substantive materials to accompany her presentation to our members.  For your convenience, and because of their length,  our LJBA President, Robert Moldnhauer, sent these opinions in pdf format to members by e-mail, so that members may print and review these opinions prior to the lunch meeting.  If you didn’t receive the e-mail, please e-mail George Hurley at [email protected], who will forward the President’s e-mail.  

This will be a very informative and interesting program that will provide 1 hour of CLE credit in ethics.  Please calendar the event, and make every effort to attend.

General Information on LJBA Luncheons

The La Jolla Bar Association (LJBA), which is an approved MCLE provider, holds monthly luncheons of its members on the second Thursday of each month, except in August and December, which are reserved for the LJBA Summer Beach Party and the LJBA Holiday Party, respectively.  This month’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Manhattan Restaurant in the historic Empress Hotel on Fay Avenue in downtown La Jolla, commencing at noon.

The MCLE luncheons are held at the Manhattan Restaurant in the historic Empress Hotel on Fay Avenue in downtown La Jolla, commencing at noon.

• Members of the LJBA may attend at no cost, other than the cost of lunch (which they are expected to purchase).
• Non-members may attend for a $20 charge plus the cost of their lunch.
