DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to have Paul H. Neuharth\, Jr.\, as our July speaker\, presenting “MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN CRIMINAL LAW\,” in which he will discuss the impact of mental health issues on the Criminal Justice system\, and how cases involving criminal activities related to mental health issues are currently handled by our California Superior Courts. During his discussion\, Paul will address relevant homeless mental health issues; the role and function of the Mental Health Court; the involvement of the Veterans Administration with these problems; and the application of current Criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (“DSM 5” criteria)\, among other things. \nOur speaker is a well known and highly respected member of the California Criminal Defense Bar\, with dual expertise in criminal and administrative law proceedings and hearings\, and has developed  knowledge and insights in these practices areas representing clients in such matters for 35 years\, and  from 7 years as a California State Law Enforcement Officer\, during which time he concurrently earned both his undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees. \nThis program is topical\, given current focus in the news on mental illness\, homelessness\, and the difficulty associated with attempting to address these matters as and when they present in the Criminal Justice System.  It is certain to be an interesting and insightful program for all of our members\, regardless of practice area. \nWe hope that all of you can attend this 1.0 hr MCLE credit program. \nNote: While this will be an “in-person” presentation\, those of you unable to attend in-person may participate through Zoom meeting access.
